MORITZ TO BABEN
Dr. Moritz to Baben is an avid materials scientist with a real passion for sustainability, recycling, and Streuselbrötchen.
He received his Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University in 2007 and his Ph.D. from the department of Materials Chemistry, RWTH Aachen University, under the supervision of Prof. Jochen M. Schneider in 2013. His research focused on oxygen incorporation in MAX phases, TiAlN, and elastic properties of nanolaminates. In addition to his research, he actively contributed to the teaching of material chemistry courses, where he introduced innovative formats such as video tutorials and a virtual student lab. Today, he continues to be involved in teaching at his alma mater, such as offering seminar lectures as part of the IEHK colloquium.
Moritz to Baben joined GTT-Technologies in 2016, contributing his expertise in metallurgical engineering and thermochemistry. With a strong focus on sustainability and recycling, he has shaped the company’s efforts toward innovative and environmentally responsible solutions. In 2017, he was appointed Managing Director.

STEPHAN PETERSEN
Dr. Stephan Petersen is a dedicated metallurgist and specialist in customer relationship management, intercultural communication, and a coffee enthusiast.
He received his diploma in Metallurgical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University in 1989. During his studies, he began exploring thermochemistry at the Department of Theoretical Metallurgy (now Materials Chemistry) , working closely with Dr. Philip Spencer and Dr. Klaus Hack. His research continued at the Institute of Solid State Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich, where he focused on high-pressure solution growth and defect thermochemistry of gallium arsenide. This work laid the foundation for his Ph.D., which he completed in 1994.
Stephan Petersen has been part of GTT-Technologies since 1992, bringing extensive knowledge in metallurgical engineering and thermochemistry. As Managing Director since 2018, he combines technical expertise with his strengths in customer relationship management and intercultural communication to drive the company’s global collaboration.

KLAUS HACK
Former managing director.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Hack graduated in physics fromRWTH Aachen University, where he began his work in thermochemistry, focusing on high-temperature mass spectrometry of ternary alloys for his diploma. His doctoral research expanded on this foundation, utilizing adiabatic high-temperature calorimetry to study ternary alloys. During his postdoctoral work at the National Physical Laboratory in the UK, he conducted assessments of boron-metal systems and developed software for the calculation of binary and higher order substitutional solution properties.
Prof. Hack was Managing Director of GTT-Technologies for more than 20 years, during which he significantly shaped the company’s development. Today, he remains actively involved as a senior consultant, continuing to contribute his vast expertise in thermochemistry and materials science.
