The Calphad Optimizer is our tool for developing and improving thermodynamic databases based on the CALPHAD methodology. With the Calphad Optimizer, you can use experimental and thermodynamic data to optimize model parameters and develop a consistent description of Gibbs energies for solutions and compounds.
In our online training course, you will learn how to use the Calphad Optimizer to set up, perform, and analyze your own optimizations. The course combines background information with demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and a real-life optimization example based on literature data.
The small group format gives you the opportunity to discuss questions and specific topics directly with the instructors.
New users can get started directly with the latest version of the Calphad Optimizer, while experienced users can update and deepen their knowledge, whether they have worked with its predecessor, OptiSage, or with earlier versions of the Calphad Optimizer, first introduced with FactSage 8.2.
In all cases, you will learn how to use the Calphad Optimizer efficiently and benefit from practical tips and best practices directly from its developers.

- Format: Online course over three half-days, plus an additional self-study exercise

- Software: Access to FactSage and the Calphad Optimizer is included for the duration of the course

Course Content
Getting started with thermodynamic database development:
We introduce the basic concepts of thermodynamic database development and discuss how the Calphad Optimizer can be used to develop new databases or improve existing ones.
Building and preparing a database:
You will learn how to create a database as input for the Calphad Optimizer, work with database parameters, and use the general workflow for loading, saving, and transferring databases between the Calphad Optimizer and FactSage.
Working with experimental data:
We cover how experimental data is set up for an optimization and how different recipes can be used to describe thermochemical and phase-equilibrium data.
Setting up and running an optimization:
You will learn how to define and adjust weight factors, optimization parameters, and hyperparameters and how these settings affect the optimization.
Analyzing optimization results:
We look at how to follow the optimization process, analyze the results, identify potential problems, and adjust the optimization setup where necessary.
